Efficient Algorithms for Discovering Potentially Interesting
Patterns
Presented on September 26 by Raj Singh
Abstract: It is generally accepted that the most important feature of a KDD system is its ability to discover patterns that are “potentially interesting”. In previous work we formally defined two types of potentially interesting patterns, referred to as positive and negative. These two types of patterns provide statistical knowledge that is able to affect one’s belief system. The discovered patterns are actionable and can guide the user into acting differently in the future. There are numerous application domains in which the discovery of positive and negative patterns is particularly significant, including the analysis of drug related data. For example, a discovered positive pattern might represent a rare but serious drug side effect, while a discovered negative pattern might represent a harmful combination of drugs.
